Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that affects the hands, wrists, and arms. It’s important to understand and address the signs of carpal tunnel syndrome because ignoring them can lead to nerve damage and worsening symptoms.

What is the Carpal Tunnel?

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway that protects the hand’s main nerve (the median nerve) and nine tendons that enable you to bend your fingers.

What Does Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Feel Like?

Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome may include:

  • Dull or throbbing pain, numbness, or tingling in the fingers, hands, or wrists
  • Numbness that travels up the arm
  • Weakness in your hands
  • Difficulty gripping or holding small objects like a pen or a cup

It most commonly affects the middle fingers, ring fingers, the base of the thumbs, and palms.

What are the Main Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome usually develops when there’s pressure on the median nerve in the wrist or it becomes “pinched.”

Lifestyle choices or patterns of hand use are considered common causes of carpal tunnel syndrome. Other causes may include a wrist fracture or medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

How to Treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome may include avoiding activities that may worsen symptoms, rest, ice, and compression.
Wrist splinting and joint injections have also been considered effective treatment options.
