Causes of Knee Pain

Knee pain may develop after an injury, degenerative condition, or structural abnormality. Causes of knee pain may include:

  • ACL injury
  • MCL injury
  • Muscle strain
  • Broken bone
  • Bursitis
  • Iliotibial band syndrome
  • Dislocated kneecap
  • Arthritis
  • Gout
  • Failed surgery

Knee Pain Symptoms

Symptoms of knee pain may vary depending on the location, severity, and cause. Signs and symptoms associated with knee pain may include:

  • Sharp, dull, aching, or stabbing pain
  • Redness and swelling
  • Stiffness, instability, or muscle weakness
  • Popping noises
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Inability to fully bend or straighten the knee
