Pediatric pain management is not often talked about, but it’s an integral part of the industry. Little Emery Miller knows firsthand the importance of having a team on your side, being an avid baseball player who has undergone 4 open-heart surgeries to recover a whole in his heart. At 12-years-old, this little hero is an inspiration to children and adults alike who live and deal with chronic pain.

This week’s episode of the Pain Channel, Matters of the Heart, checks back in on Emery Miller and his epic quest to brighten the lives of others who have experienced heart disease and spread awareness for pediatric health care.

In the first twelve years of his young life, Emery has had to deal with numerous heart surgeries, countless medical procedures, and a body that leaves him exhausted doing activities his friends take for granted.  Still, twelve-year-old Emery has achieved more than most healthy kids could ever hope to do.

An accomplished motivational speaker, Emery has shared his story with the public and the media, and in doing so has inspired countless lives.  He has spoken in front of thousands of people, including the Arizona Cardinals, and has become one of the top fundraisers throughout Arizona for the American Heart Association.  Through passion, dedication, and courage, Emery has managed to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for heart research, money that is having a direct positive impact on his health.

Not only has Emery become a bit of sensation here in the valley (look closely in the Pain Channel video for a picture of Emery with Pat Tillman), his strength and courage landed him role on one of the last episodes of ER back in 2009. And as a regular at the Phoenix Heart Walk, which took place in February, Emery has earned Top Fundraiser for many years in a row, raising over $150,000 for the American Heart Association throughout his lifetime.

Emery's unbelievable story is chronicled in this week's episode of The Pain Channel, where you can learn directly from Emery and his mother how they managed to take a devastating medical diagnosis and turn it into a positive.  From the baseball field, to the Heart Walk, to the classroom, Emery lives his life as a true inspiration, proving that real heart cannot be measured in an operating room.
